Dystopia Completes Treble For Waller in Mumm Stakes

Dystopia has given leading trainer Chris Waller his third victory from as many runners at Flemington today with an impressive win in the Group 3 Mumm Stakes (1200m).

Waller won the Flemington Style Plate (1700m) with Marmelo in the opening race of the day and well-backed Multilateral gave him a double with a fast-finishing victory in the Swisse Wellness Trophy (1800m).

Dystopia started the race as favourite, despite being a big drifter in Mumm Stakes betting favourite, and was far too strong for the rest of the field in the final stages of the race; scoring an impressive one and a half lengths victory from a fast-finishing Shamal Wind and a game She Can Skate.

The win mean’s that Waller is the first trainer to have three winners on a day during the Melbourne Cup Carnival since 2008 and in typically modest fashion was quick to pay tribute to the ride of Hugh Bowman as well as the work of the rest of his team in both Sydney and Melbourne.

“It is all made possible by the rest of the team, in Sydney and here, and they send the horses to the races in good condition,” Waller said after the race.

“We have great supporting owners and good jockeys, three different jockeys today, and that makes the team something that we are very proud of.

“Hugh Bowman has done a lot of work with this horse.

“She certainly isn’t an easy horse to get to win but she has the ability and she has run some good races.

“This won’t be the last race that she wins and full credit to Hughie; it was a great ride and timed to perfection.

“We are very happy to have one winner but to have three winners on a day like today is very special.”

Dystopia was having just her third start of her spring campaign and recorded her first race win since her triumph in the Listed Toy Show Quality (1300m) at Warwick Farm over a year ago.

The Redoute’s Choice mare performed well during the autumn without winning, finishing fourth in both the Group 1 The Galaxy (1100m) and the Group 2 Sapphire Stakes (1200m), and ended her preparation with an unlucky third place finish in the Listed Bright Shadow Handicap (1200m) at Eagle Farm in Brisbane.

After an uncharacteristically poor first-up performance in the Group 3 Sheraco Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill Gardens, she returned to her best form with a narrow second behind stablemate Arinosa in the Group 2 Premiere Stakes (1200m) at her last start before today’s victory.

Waller will have an opportunity to add another major race win during the 2013 Melbourne Cup Carnival when Boban contests the Group 1 Emirates Stakes (1600m) at Flemington on Saturday.
