Doomben Cup An Option For Queen Of The South Stakes Winner Amelie’s Star

Amelie’s Star could head to the 2017 Doomben Cup in a fortnight after she returned to the races with a strong win in the 2017 Queen Of The South Stakes at Morphettville this afternoon.

Amelie’s Star went into the Queen Of The South Stakes as a clear favourite, but jockey Damian Lane was happy to sit towards the tail of the field in the early stages of the race.

Lane let Amelie’s Star cart herself into the race and she did just that going into the straight before she let down impressively in the final stages of the Queen Of The South Stakes to pick-up her rivals comfortably.

Trainer Darren Weir is yet to reveal his plans with Amelie’s Star, but the daughter of Testa Rossa looks set to head North for the 2017 Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival and she has been included in the nominations for the Group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m).

Amelie’s Star started her career under the care of Peter Moody and she did not show a great deal early, but she went to another level as a four-year-old over staying trips and recorded four wins on the trot, which concluded in a dominant victory in the Group 3 Colin Stephen Quality (2400m) at Rosehill Gardens in 2015.

Injury kept Amelie’s Star away from the races for over a year before she returned to the races with a fourth place finish in the Graeme Conron Handicap (1600m) at Morphettville on April 8 and she finished second in the Long Tan Handicap (1800m) at Flemington on Anzac Day.
