Don’t Forget Waterhouse’s Golden Spring Hope

All the talk coming out of Gai Waterhouse’s stable heading into the spring is likely to be about top Melbourne Cup fancy Fiorente which could leave the door open for another import to slip under the radar.

Glencadam Gold, who won the Group 1 Metropolitan for the Randwick trainer in October, is back in work and will again join Waterhouse’s charge towards the spring’s major races.

The rising six-year-old attracted serious hype heading into the Caulfield Cup last year after winning his first four starts on Australian soil.

But the former British stayer failed to fire at Caulfiled – finishing in 15th place – before bouncing back for a respectable sixth in the Melbourne Cup.

Despite finishing only six lengths off the winner in Australia’s biggest race last year, Glencadam Gold is at $51 in the 2013 Melbourne Cup market.

But Waterhouse remains confident the front-runner can be a big player this spring and said he impressed in a solid piece of trackwork for jockey Nathan Berry on Tuesday.

“Glencadam Gold was Nathan’s best of the morning after the gelding galloped over 1400m,” Waterhouse said on her website.

“He was so impressive in his first Australian campaign rising from restricted midweek level to winning a Group 1. The gelding has enjoyed his spell and looks a million bucks heading towards the major spring races.”

Also continuing to impress in his build-up to the spring’s staying features is fellow import Carlton House who finished second to champion galloper So You Think in the 2012 Prince Of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot.

“Carlton House is one of the classiest horses in Australia and he has improved so much since his one start in the autumn,” Waterhouse said.

“Look out for this entire in the really big races in the spring.”
