Doncaster Mile still an option for Chipping Norton Stakes favourite Winx

The Group 1 $3m The Star Doncaster Mile (1600m) at Randwick on April 2, the first day of ‘The Championships’, is still an option for Chipping Norton Stakes favourite Winx.

Winx is chasing her seventh straight win and is a $1.35 chance at Ladbrokes.com.au to win the Group 1 $600,000 Precise Air Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) at Randwick today.

And while trainer Chris Waller has selected the Group 1 $4m Longines Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) at Randwick on day two of ‘The Championships’ as Winx’s main Autumn Carnival assignment, the premiership winning trainer hasn’t ruled out a start the week before in the Doncaster Mile.

“I don’t like looking too closely at the Doncaster until two weeks before the race,’’ Waller told The Daily Telegraph.

“The weights mean nothing until you know the likely field.

“If she looks a winning chance at the weights there is every likelihood she will run in the Doncaster. But if there are horses down on the minimum or down in the weights that we think can clearly beat her on weights and measures, then she won’t run in the Doncaster.

“We are not in a position where we have to have a throw at the stumps because of the Doncaster prizemoney because we can wait a week for the Queen Elizabeth Stakes.”

Winx, the winner of the 2015 Group 1 $3m Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley, has been allocated 56.5kg for the Doncaster Mile and is currently on the second line of betting at $7.50 behind stablemate Press Statement who heads the market order at $7.

The Street Cry returned from a spell with a comfortable first up win in the Group 2 $250,000 Optus Business Apollo Stakes (1400m) at Randwick a fortnight ago and Waller has been pleased with the way she has progressed since.

“She has done really well between runs,’’ Waller said.

“I was interested to see how she would tighten up after her Apollo Stakes win as she is not one to carry a lot of condition.

“So, had she tightened up a lot I would not have been concerned but she has stayed about the same. This a good sign, it shows she is thriving and doing well.’’

Chipping Norton Stakes market order at Ladbrokes.com.au: $1.35 Winx, $8 Hartnell, $14 Mongolian Khan, $16 Hauraki, $17 Dibayani, $26 Storm The Stars, $31 Magic Hurricane, $41 Centre Pivot, $61 Preferment, $101 Gust Of Wind, Who Shot Thebarman, $151 Grand Marshall.
