Team Hawkes will make a decision over the weekend if Group 2 $175,000 Myer Tulloch Stakes (2000m) winner Polish Knight will back up next week in the Australian Derby.

Wayne Hawkes representing the stable said it would be a big ask for Polish Knight to go around again next after the three year old was still in his first racing preparation.

“He’s a serious horse this horse and he is certainly going somewhere. He should have won his last three. He was a 35-1 chance and if he would have won his last three a lot of people would have given him a lot more respect,” Hawkes said.

Polish Knight only won his maiden at Ballarat on March 1, ran second at Sale on March 14 and ran into a lot of trouble at Caulfield when ninth to Flashy Fella in the De La Salle Centenary Plate (2000m) on March 24.

Winning jockey Brenton Avdulla rode Polish Knight quietly and was near last on the home turn when favourite Strawberry Boy and Rekindled  Alliance went to the front together.

Avdulla eased Polish Knight to the outside and ran to the line very strongly to score a comfortable win.

Polish Knight was one of the outsiders at $31 while $2.60 favourite Strawberry Boy faded to finish eighth.
