The Queensland Guineas for the three year olds will be run at Doomben on June 6 over 1600m this year while the Eagle Farm track is getting a makeover and trainer Brian Wakefield thinks ‘the mile’ will suit Denarius.
“I’m hoping he might make a Queensland Guineas horse,” Wakefield told Racing Queensland News.
“The way he races he’ll appreciate the trip.”
Denarius came from barrier nine before overhauling the leaders to take the $65,000 Impact Roofing Newcastle QTIS Three Year Old Handicap (1110m) at Doomben last Saturday with Wakefield describing it as a tough win.
And the Eagle Farm trainer was just as impressed at the gelding’s previous run when an unlucky sixth in similar company when caught wide from an outside gate.
“He did it tough again but I thought he was unlucky at his previous run when he got trapped wide and was hit over the head,” Wakefield said.
Even though Wakefield has set his sights pretty high leading into the Winter Carnival, for the time being he will continue to chase the lucrative QTIS bonuses that are on offer for the three year olds.
“For the time being I’ll just keeping chasing QTIS prizemoney,” Wakefield said.
Wakefield is hoping to maintain the trend of locally trained three year olds collecting the winning trophy for the Queensland Guineas after the Steven O’Dea trained Sir Moments took out the three year old feature last year which followed the victory of two year old Group 1 winner Sizzling from the Kelso Wood stable in 2013.
The lightly raced son of Red Element has only raced four times with last weekend’s win his second after scoring on debut over 1200m in a Doomben two year old maiden back in June.
From his two race wins Denarius has earned just over $84,000 in prizemoney and bonuses for his connections.
