December Draw

December Draw was injured during the Caulfield Cup

The Caulfield Cup nightmare of trainer Mark Kavanagh has continued with the injury of December Draw resulting from yesterday’s Caulfeild Cup.

Starting $3.30 favourite, December Draw was virtually pulled out of the race in the home straight and finished last.

While no abnormality was found by Racing Victoria vets after the race, the Kavanagh yard has reported more serious situation this morning.

December Draw has been spelled after the six-year-old gelding had been diagnosed with a fracture to the lateral splint bone in the off hind leg.

If the day wasn’t bad enough, the Kavanagh-trained Amy’s Glen bled from both nostrils in the Carlton Draught Plate (the final race) at Caulfield which dictates an automatic three month suspension for the mare.

In 2010, the Kavanagh-trained Shocking started favourite for the Caulfield Cup but was caught up in traffic only getting clear too late.

In 2007, his subsequent Cox Plate winner, Maldivian was a raging hot favourite for the Cup but was withdrawn after a barrier mishap.

Maldivian hit his head on a TV camera erected in the barrier stall after Eskimo Queen flipped in the adjoining barrier causing him to rear up,

Other news from yesterday’s Caulfield Cup is Lucas Cranach was reported to be slightly lame after the race and jockey Nick Hall was fined $5000 on the a whip violation rule.

Hall rode Green Moon into second placing behind Southern Speed.
