Debonairly firms in Magic Millions 2yo Classic betting

Well bred filly Debonairly has firmed sharply in the betting for the $2m Magic Millions 2yo Classic (1200m) at the Gold Coast on January 14 following her four and a quarter lengths debut win at Warwick Farm on Wednesday.

The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott trained Debonairly was sent out as the third favourite at $4 in the five horse field but after Kerrin McEvoy had her out of the barrier quickly, the Snitzel filly was never headed and ran away in the straight to record a very impressive win.

Debonairly is now marked at $12 at Ladbrokes.com.au for the Magic Millions 2yo Classic after $26 was on offer before her explosive win the $40,000 Schweppes 2yo Plate over 1100m.

Debonairly is now set to return the Gold Coast where she was purchased at the 2016 Magic Millions Yearling Sales for $350,000.

“She’s got Gold Coast filly stamped all over her,” Waterhouse and Bott’s racing manager Emma Pearce said.

“Just the way she jumped, went to the front and didn’t get caught.

“I’d like to see that early January.”

McEvoy rode Debonairly to win a 807m Warwick Farm barrier trial on December 2 but the Melbourne Cup winning jockey said the filly had improved immensely for her first race day outing.

“She was on song today and ready to pump,” McEvoy said.

Waterhouse and Bott formed a training partnership this season and if Debonairly was to win the Magic Millions 2yo Classic it would be Bott’s first in the glamour two year old whereas it would add to Waterhouse’s four previous winners, Assertive Lad (2000), Excellerator (2001), Dance Hero (2004) and Driefontein (2012).

The Tulloch Lodge co-trainers already have Invincible Star heading to the Gold Coast and the I Am Invincible filly is on the second line of betting at $9 following her first up win in the Group 3 $150,000 Ottawa Stakes (1000m) at Flemington on Melbourne Cup Day.

The Lindsay Park trained Madeenaty finished third to Invincible Star in the Ottawa Stakes but heads the Magic Millions 2yo Classic market order at $7 on the basis of her debut two and a quarter lengths win in the Listed $120,000 Maribyrnong Trial Stakes (1000m) at Flemington October 2.
