Curtis Sticks with Winona Costin on Press Report in Flight Stakes

Rosehill trainer Lee Curtis is sticking with claiming apprentice Winona Costin on Press Report in the Group 1 $400,000 Coolmore Flight Stakes (1600m) at Randwick on Saturday.

Costin is still eligible to claim 2kgs but  apprentices are unable to claim any of their allowances on Saturday with all nine events at Randwick being non claiming races.

But Curtis is happy to stick with Costin after the talented apprentice has forged a good association with the Written Tycoon filly.

Costin has been aboard Press Report in two of her last three starts including a win over 1300m at Rosehill on August 2 and a last start seventh to Hallowed Crown in the Group 1 $1m De Bortoli Wines Golden Rose Stakes (1400m) at Rosehill on September 13.

The talented apprentice had her first taste of Group 1 racing in the Golden Rose and told Curtis that Press Report should have no problems stepping up to the 1600m of the Flight Stakes.

“The 1600 metres is a query for most of them but Winona feels she will get the trip easily,” Curtis told AAP.

“It seems there’s a different filly winning each week so hopefully it’s our turn.

“My only concern is that her best runs have been at Rosehill not Randwick.”

Press Report has drawn barrier seven in a field of nine with the highly fancied Chris Waller filly Winx, with Hugh Bowman to ride, drawing next to her at eight.

Waller will also saddle up Dynamic Rock with Tim Clark out of gate two.

Last start Tea Rose Stakes winner First Seal from the John Thompson stable has drawn gate five with Blake Shinn to ride again while Peter Moody’s unbeaten Thorn Park filly Thinking Of You has drawn barrier three with Josh Parr taking over from Luke Nolen.

Gai Waterhouse will have three fillies chasing the Group 1 first prize with Echo Gal (barrier 4), Twirl (barrier 1) and Muscovado (barrier 9) all in the final Flight Stakes field while Team Hawkes will be represented by Lady Sharapova who will jump from gate six with James McDonald.

Coston, who is apprenticed to Waterhouse at Tulloch Lodge, is also aboard the David Payne trained Honorius in the Group 1 $500,000 The Star Epsom (1600m).

And she is also riding Anthony Cummings’ two two-year-olds, Love Las Vegas in the Listed $100,000 Keeneland Gimcrack Stakes (1000m) for the fillies and Rhode Assassin in the Listed $100,000 NSW Thoroughbred Breeders’ Plate (1000m) for the colts and geldings.
