Undefeated colt Cruden Bay is penciled in to start his 2013 Spring Racing Carnival campaign in the Group 2 Danehill Stakes (1200m) at Flemington on September 7.

The classy two-year-old showed plenty of talent in his brief juvenile campaign, winning by four lengths in a maiden at Bendigo on debut before easily accounting for a strong field in the Listed St Albans Stakes (1200m) at Moonee Valley on March 15.

He was most impressive in the St Albans Stakes, running the field rugged in the early stages of the race before racing away to score an easy two lengths victory from Gracious Prospect and Excitable Boy.

Cruden Bay has returned to the Flemington stable of Anthony Freedman, despite claims after his Listed victory that he would resume his racing career in Singapore, and the leading trainer is delighted with the progress of the son of Not A Single Doubt.

Freedman is still unsure which race will the major spring carnival target for the classy colt, with the Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) on October 12 and the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) at Flemington on Victoria Derby Day both on the agenda, but he is hopeful the rising three-year-old can compete at racings’ highest level.

“He’s strengthened up into a nice three-year-old, but we’ve still got to see if he’s up to it,” Freedman told Racing Victoria.

“He’ll trial in a few weeks and I’d like to run him in the Danehill.”

The Freedman brothers have won over 120 Group 1 events right around Australia but are still chasing their first victory in both the Caulfield Guineas and Coolmore Stud Stakes.
