Craig Williams has once again shown class knows no borders with a sensational victory in Japan.

In what can be attributed to both a change in luck and greater opportunity, Williams has transferred the sensational form he displayed in Australia across Asia in some of the regions biggest events.

His latest triumph came at Nakayama in the biggest two year old race run anywhere in Japan.

Amazingly Williams wasn’t even scheduled to take part in the race until his blossoming reputation did the work for him.

“It was a pick-up ride. Somebody recommended me to the trainer and owner,” Williams said.

Not only was it his first ride on the two year old colt Alfredo, it was his first ride for trainer Takahisa Tezuka in his first attempt at the $1.75 million Futurity.

This latest victory makes Japan the third country in three months where he’s won a Group 1.

The list includes the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (Toorak Toff); the Caulfield Cup (Southern Speed); the Cox Plate (Pinker Pinker), the Railway Stakes (Ortensia), the Hong Kong Vase (Dunaden) and the Hai Futurity (Alfredo).

His win on Dunaden in the Hong Kong Vase held special significance given Williams was robbed of the chance at adding the Melbourne Cup to his resume when he was suspended.

Had he won that race he would have become the first rider in history to claim the Cox Plate, Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup in the same year.
