Craig Williams's suspension hearing will be held tomorrow to determine if he will ride in the Melbourne Cup

The 2011 Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival star hoop Craig Williams is likely to know tomorrow whether he will be able to ride French galloper Dunaden in Tuesday’s $6m Group 1 Melbourne Cup (3200m).

Racing Victoria chief steward Terry Bailey says he is pretty certain Williams’ appeal will be held 10.30am (EST).

Williams will fight a 10 meeting suspension for careless riding aboard The Red Emperor in the Yalumba Handicap at Bendigo yesterday.

If unsuccessful the suspension starts after Derby Day on Saturday and will deny William’s the chance of becoming the first jockey to win a Caulfield Cup, Cox Plate and Melbourne Cup in the same year.

Williams won the Caulfeld Cup aboard Southern Speed and the Cox Plate on Pinker Pinker with two superb rides that coaxed each horse to victory.

The Mikel Dalzangles yard have French jockey Christophe Lemaire on standby if Williams gets rubbed out.

The engagement of the experienced Lemaire may have Melbourne Cup betting consequences with the rushed trip hardly seeming ideal.

Lemaire has ridden Dunaden twice in the Prix Du Languedoc and Prix De Provence at St Cloud  in April 2010.

He was placed third at both starts on Dunaden when it was trained by Yannick Fouin.

Lemaire, 32, rode Aussie horse Starcraft to victory in the 2005 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot and has ridden around the world extensively.

To date Nash Rawiller, who is fighting an eight meeting suspension for careless riding on maiden galloper Star Bender is yet to fire in an appeal but intends to do so.

Rawiller is engaged to ride Unusual Suspect in the Melbourne Cup.
