Tansy has been included in the 2014 Doveton Stakes field and trainer Byron Cozamanis is hopeful that the promising gelding can be competitive in the Listed event at Sandown on Saturday.

Tansy made his racing debut with a poor performance at Kembla Grange in July last year under the care of Gai Waterhouse and he was transferred to the Cozamanis stable before he started his summer campaign with a second place finish at Werribee.

The Purrealist gelding recorded his maiden race win with a dominant seven lengths victory at Stony Creek on January 28 and he recorded a maiden metropolitan race win at Sandown in February before he finished a close second in a heat of the 55 Second Challenge at Moonee Valley on February 28.

Tansy was sent to the spelling paddock after he finished at the tail of the field in the 1Print.Com.Au Handicap (1200m) at Moonee Valley on March 21 and he returned to racing with a unlucky ninth at Bendigo before he returned to a semblance of his best form with a third place finish at Bendigo.

The four-year-old scored an impressive two lengths win in the Racing.Com Handicap (1100m) at Bendigo on October 29 and he had no luck when fifth in the Jayco Handicap (1100m) at the same venue on November 26.

Cozamanis admits that the Doveton Stakes, which will be run as the Emma Booth Christmas Cup, represents a significant step-up in class for Tansy, but he believes that the four-year-old is a progressive sprinter who is capable of performing strongly at black type level.

“He is a pretty promising horse,” Cozamanis told RSN this morning.

“He is going into the Doveton, which is a Listed race and it will be a very good race.

“He is proving to be an exciting young horse I think.

“He has never put a bad one in and he is improving all the time.

“He is still a bit green, but I have blinkers on him and we will see what happens.

“He tries hard and he is a genuine racehorse.”

Tansy will need to perform at his very best to be any chance in the Doveton Stakes after the likes of Group 3 winner Lord Of The Sky, Robbie Griffiths-trained It Is Written, the resuming Go The Knuckle and consistent sprinter Eight Bills were included in the acceptances for the $120,000 race.
