Cox Plate Odds Update: Hartnell On The Drift

The 2016 Cox Plate odds of Hartnell have shortened overnight and the Godolphin galloper is now into $3.50 to take out the Group 1 event at Moonee Valley this afternoon.

Update:

Hartnell has drifted out to 2016 Cox Plate odds of $3.90 in the last hour as the money comes for Lucia Valentina ($21 into $17) and Yankee Rose ($16 into $15).

Winx remains a clear favourite in the 2016 Cox Plate betting market with Ladbrokes at a quote of $1.85.

Hartnell got out Cox Plate odds as long as $3.70 as the money pour in for Winx yesterday afternoon, but there has been a resurgence in support for the Authorized gelding while Winx is back to $1.85.

Hartnell was no match for Winx when they both returned to the races in the Group 2 Warwick Stakes (1400m) at Royal Randwick on August 20, but he stamped himself as a leading Cox Plate contender with dominant victories in the Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m) on September 3, the Group 2 Hill Stakes (2000m) on September 17 and the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) at Flemington on October 2, with leading form analyst Daniel O’Sullivan tipping Hartnell as the value runner in the Group 1 event.

While there has been money in the Cox Plate betting market with Ladbrokes for Hartnell, Winx remains the clear market mover and is now available at $1.85 to record back-to-back Cox Plate victories.

Ladbrokes have received a truckload of money for the star mare and they took a bet of $100,000 at $2.20 as well as $50,000 at $2.35, $25,000 at $2.10, $25,000 at $2 and $20,000 at $2.

Winx has had a flawless lead-up to the 2016 Cox Plate and she has not been beaten in a race since she finished second behind Gust Of Wind in the Group 1 Australian Oaks (2400m) at Royal Randwick in April last year.

Hartnell and Winx are the only horses available at single-figure Cox Plate odds and there is a big gap to Yankee Rose on the third line of betting.

Surround is the only three-year-old in history to win the Cox Plate, but punters have thrown their support behind Yankee Rose and she has remained solid at her quote of $16.

The only other horse that is available at Cox Plate odds shorter than $21 is Vadamos, who has drifted from $14 earlier in the week after star hoop Joao Moreira was unable to take the ride due to the Typhoon in Hong Kong.

The 2016 Cox Plate betting market is rounded out by talented mare Lucia Valentina ($21), Epsom Handicap winner Hauraki ($26), Darren Weir-trained Black Heart Bart ($26), Dato’ Tan Chin Nam Stakes winner Awesome Rock ($101), Patrick Webster-trained Happy Clapper ($101) and veteran gelding Happy Trails ($151).
