Cox Plate Invite Al Kazeem Wins at Royal Ascot

British entire Al Kazeem has soared to the top of the Cox Plate wish list after winning the prestigious Group 1 Prince Of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot.

The five-year-old stepped out as favourite after defeating Camelot in the Tattersalls Gold Cup last month and further enhanced his reputation as an international star.

Turning for home Al Kazeem gave leader Mukhadram a lengthy start. With Mukhadram travelling comfortably, there was only going to one horse who could chase him down.

It wasn’t easy but Al Kazeem delivered a long, sustained sprint to get to the front-runner before toppling him in the dying stages. It was an excellent ride from James Doyle who was the only jockey to show initiative when Mukhadram headed into the straight with a clear margin on his rivals.

Al Kazeem was one of 20 international horses issues a Cox Plate invite by the Moonee Valley Racing Club last week and would certainly add some extra buzz if he were to make the trip to the spring carnival.

Despite being five years old, the son of Dubawi has raced just 11 times, recording six wins including two at Group 1 level.

Trainer Roger Charlton told the UK’s Racing Post he is not sure where he will aim Al Kazeem but indicated the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in France is on his radar.

“There are lots of lovely races for him, I’ve not spoken to the owners but I’ve always wanted a runner in the Arc,” Charlton said.

“That said the Eclipse is in 17 days and he’d be favourite. We’ll let the horse tell us.”

Another horse invited to the Cox Plate, John Gosden-trained mare The Fugue, finished in third position.
