Cox Plate Candidate Littorio Retired Due To Injury

Littorio has been retired

Serious Cox Plate contender Littorio has been retired from racing despite his impressive victory in the Group 2 Makybe Diva Stakes at Flemington just nine days ago.

The decision came after trainer Nigel Blackiston was told the seven-year-old gelding had developed tendinitis in his good leg yesterday.

The injury is said to have been found after a routine scan was conducted on the horse.

Littorio has constantly battled tendon injuries in one leg and this latest discovery meant there was no option but to prematurely end of the Bellotto gelding’s career.

The talented gelding had a career that spanned 25 starts and included wins in both the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes in 2009 and the Group 1 The BMW in 2010.

Littorio also placed in the Victoria Derby and the Australian Derby as a three-year-old.

With current prize money of almost $2.5 million, Littorio was nominated for a start in the year’s Melbourne Cup, Caulfield Cup and Cox Plate.
