Coruba Queen made her racing debut at the end of last year and failed to impress in two race starts, but she has been flawless this campaign since returning to the races with a narrow win in the Kawana Chamber Of Commerce Maiden (1200m) at the Sunshine Coast on December 7.

The Warhead filly scored her second race win in the Shadforth Civil Handicap (1400m) at the Sunshine Coast on June 7 before scoring her maiden metropolitan victory in the Hidden Dragon At Lyndhurst Handicap (1350m) at Doomben on June 18 – a performance that has earnt her an opportunity in the Group 3 Sunshine Coast Guineas (1400m) this weekend.

Trainer Len Treloar has been thrilled with the improvement that Coruba Queen has made in her second racing campaign and is looked forward to see just how good the three-year-old is when she takes on a tough field on Saturday.

“She has been an interesting filly,” Treloar said.

“In her first preparation for me, where she only had two starts, she didn’t show me a great deal; she was a bit immature physically and mentally.

“She had the one start where she ran fifth and I was pleased with that run and her next start at Doomben was disappointing, but she pulled up shin sore, so we turned her out for a spell and we bought her back.

“From the time that she has come back into work, she has been a totally different horse physically and mentally.

“She is far more alert, more switched on and her first-up win was good and her second-up win was very, very good.

“Last start win at Doomben, where she sat in behind the leaders and bullocked her way through, I thought was a good sign from a good tough filly mentally who wanted to win.

“The Guineas on Saturday over a mile is a good opportunity just to see where she is at the moment, but she is certainly a filly that has come a long way in a short period of time in terms of ability and especially her mental approach to racing.”

Coruba Queen is currently 19th in the ballot for the Sunshine Coast Guineas and requires a horse above her in the order of entry to be withdrawn in order to be assured of a start in the Group 3 event.
