Trainer Mick Price has revealed that Cornrow is unlikely to contest the 2014 Sires Produce Stakes that will be run at Royal Randwick this weekend on the opening day of The Championships.

Cornrow was included in the Sires Produce Stakes final field that was released yesterday, but Price told Sky Racing HQ this morning that the colt would not contest the race if wet weather persists in Sydney this weekend after he failed to fire on a wet track in the Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m) at Rosehill Gardens this weekend.

“He was hopeless in the ground the other day at Rosehill,” Price said.

“I would say that he is doubtful to run, but I will wait until Saturday morning.

“If it is a heavy track he won’t be going around and even if it is a slow track and the day is ordinary he won’t be going around.

“It is a pity because he is running around on his hind legs and he is full of himself.

“He is a tough two-year-old and I would love to run him, but not on wet ground.”

Cornrow is yet to breakthrough for his maiden race win, but before his Golden Slipper flop, was one of the most consistent two-year-old colts in Australia.

The son of Duporth made his racing debut with a third place finish in the Inglis Banner (1000m) at Moonee Valley on October 26 and started his autumn campaign with a fast-finishing second behind Mohave in the Listed Blue Diamond Preview (1000m) at Caulfield on January 25.

Cornrow was far from disgraced when fifth behind Rubick in the Group 3 Blue Diamond Prelude (1100m) at Caulfield on February 8 and produced the best performance of his career to date when he flashed home late to finish third behind Earthquake and Jabali at big odds in the Group 1 Blue Diamond Stakes (1200m).

After a brief freshen-up Cornrow returned to the races with an unlucky third behind Ghibellines and Unencumbered in the Group 2 Todman Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill Gardens on March 22 and received a sprinkling of support in the lead-up to the Golden Slipper, but was never in the race and he beat home just a single runner.

Cornrow is currently available at 2014 Sires Produce Stakes odds of $14; with Believe Yourself ($3.90) a narrow favourite from stablemate Peggy Jean ($4.40), Kumaon ($6) and Lucky Raquie ($6.50).
