Clarry Conners will be fighting a battle of the bulge over the next few weeks as he tries to get his girls back in shape for the 2011 Spring carnivals in Melbourne and Sydney.

His fillies can find plenty of pace when they race but they can also find a few extra kilograms in the spelling paddock as well.

“Georgette Silk comes in on Friday, she’s put on something like 25kg, she’s a little fatty,” he said.

“First up last start the commentator said she looked like a broodmare.”

He’ll be hoping the spell helped her though after she had an absolute horror finish to the Autumn carnival.

Georgette Silk ran last in the PJ Bell at Canterbury, last in the Gosford Guineas and last in her final race during the Scone Carnival.

To be fair a few of her runs can be discounted as she simply can’t handle a wet track, but with poor form and 25 extra kilos, Conners has plenty of work to do over the next month and a half.

“Trial them in six or seven weeks and then 10 days or a fortnight you give them a start,” he said.

Satin Shoes has bulked up but is looking healthy coming into her three-year-old season

One of his horses that performed better in Sydney was Satin Shoes, she was undefeated for a while before stumbling into the Golden Slipper and running out of puff.

She’s also bulked up a bit but much of it is healthy as she comes into her three-year-old season.

“She’s put a lot of weight on, developed a fair bit, she looks super,” Conner’s said.

Unfortunately there is one big issue for her heading into the Spring, that’s the fact Conner’s simply can’t find her a campaign at home in Sydney.

“Finding a race is going to be hard for her, the way they’ve got the programs is fairly difficult,” he said.

“I think I’m going to have to give her one start and then take her to Melbourne, I don’t want to do that.”

Conner’s complaints are that his filly is suited only up to a distance of 1200m and that the Sydney program only caters for races around the 1300m and 1400m marks.

Also coming back to work in the next week or so for Conner’s are Irish Times, Invest, Bright Heart and one of his best Decision Time.

“He’s a week off, done very good we’re very happy with him,” he said.

The ultimate goal for Decision Time would probably be the $1 Million Patinack Farm Classic but Conner’s is wary of the huge interest in the race form horses both here and overseas.

As a result he’d have to perform extremely well in the lead up races and will most likely contest a smaller race instead.
