The 2014 Adelaide Cup form guide is currently being poured over by punters around Australia; with everybody trying to pick the winner of the Group 2 event that will be held at Morphettville this afternoon.

The Adelaide Cup always draws a strong field of progressive stayers and this year is no exception; with thirteen gallopers set to take part in the time-honored race this afternoon.
1. Black Tycoon (59kg)
Black Tycoon won the 2014 Perth Cup in impressive fashion at Ascot on New Year’s Day, but has failed to fire in two subsequent starts; finishing fourth in the Listed Detonator Stakes (1800m) and seventh in the AHA Cup (2019m). The Blackfriars gelding will have to carry the top weight of 59kg and will need a special Damien Oliver ride from barrier 15.
2. Rialya (55.5kg)
Rialya won the 2012 edition of the Adelaide Cup, but his lead-up form to this year’s race has been inconsistent. He worked home strongly late to finish third in the Listed Birthday Cup (2250m) on February 15 and he will have to improve significantly on his seventh place finish in the Group 3 Lord Reims Stakes (2600m) to be any chance in the Adelaide Cup.
3. Big Memory (54.5kg)
The imported stayer has not produced a bad performance this preparation and he stamped himself as a leading 2014 Adelaide Cup contender with a dominant win in the Listed Torney Night Cup (2500m) at Moonee Valley on February 21. He gives every impression that he will run out the 3200 meters strongly.
4. Cooldini (54.5kg)
Cooldini has been the best backed runner in 2014 Adelaide Cup betting markets following his strong win in the Listed Roy Higgins Quality (2600m) at Flemington on March 1. The son of Bernardini has no experience over 3200 metres, but will be tough to beat if he can replicate his last start performance.
5. Outback Joe (54kg)
Outback Joe stamped himself as a stayer to watch with a strong win in the Bagot Handicap (2800m) at Flemington on New Year’s Day and finished third behind Cooldini in the Roy Higgins Quality. The Nigel Blackiston-trained galloper is very consistent and rarely produces a bad race over a staying trip.
7. Macedonian (53.5kg)
Macedonian made a slow start to his preparation, but returned to his best form with a stunning third place finish in the Listed Mornington Cup (2400m) and finished a fair fourth in the Roy Higgins Quality. The evergreen stayer is one of the only horses in the field that has previously been successful over 3200 metres and he can never be ruled out.
8. Distillation (53.5kg)
Distillation was far from disgraced when sixth in the 2013 Adelaide Cup and is taking better form into this year’s race. The Half Hennessy gelding scored a narrow win in the Lord Reims Stakes and is an outsider that could surprise at big odds.
9. Vima (53.5kg)
Vima is making his debut at Group 2 level and based on his Lord Reims Stakes performance will need to improve significantly to be any chance in the Adelaide Cup this afternoon.
10. Motivado (53.5kg)
The imported stayer has promised plenty since arriving in Australia, but was unable to find his best form during the 2013 Spring Racing Carnival. The Motivator gelding should have no problem running out a strong 3200 metres and has also been included in the nominations for the Sydney Cup.
11. Base (53.5kg)
The Zabeel gelding has not won since 2011, but his Adelaide Cup lead-up form has been strong after finishing second in both the Marong Cup (2200m) and Lord Reims Stakes. The seven-year-old is close to career best form and could add some value to the exotics.
13. Like A Carousel (53.5kg)
Like A Carousel broke his maiden with a win in the MSC Signs Handicap (2500m) at Moonee Valley on February 14, but this is a massive step-up in class.
14. Full Bore (53.5kg)
Full Bore performed only fairly in the Lord Reims Stakes and most of his race wins have been at provincial venues, but has leading Adelaide jockey Dom Tourneur on his back.
16. Power To Possess (53.5kg)
Power To Possess has scored only three wins from 45 career starts and has not been victorious in over a year. The Refuse To Bend gelding will be making his Group debut in the Adelaide Cup.
