Commanding Jewel To Cockram Stakes After Jump Out Win

Talented mare Commanding Jewel is set to return to the racing in the Group 3 Cockram Stakes (1200m) at Caulfield on August 30 after she won a jump out over 800 metres in impressive fashion at Flemington this morning.

Commanding Jewel jumped from the gates fairly and was settled at the outside of the field in the early stages of the trial before working into the race nicely.

The daughter of Commands was not asked for an extra by jockey Damien Oliver, but she pulled well clear from the rest of the field in the final stages to record a comfortable three and a half lengths victory and clock the fastest final 400 metres of the morning.

Co-trainer Leon Corstens told Racing Victoria that he was very happy with the jump out performance of his star mare and he confirmed that she would start her 2014 Spring Racing Carnival campaign in the Cockram Stakes in just over a fortnight.

“She looked like she trialled quite nice,” Corstens said.

“She went to the line really good under a nice hold so hopefully she pulls up and all going well we’ll most likely start off in the Group 3 Cockram Stakes.”

“She comes in well at the weights, if I start her off in something else she’s going to get the grandstand and I don’t want to be busting her boiler first up.”

Commanding Jewel had her 2013 Spring Racing Carnival campaign prematurely ended when she injured her fetlock after winning the Group 2 Let’s Elope Stakes (1400m) at Flemington on September 7 and she missed the 2014 Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival due to the same issue.

Corstens was hoping that Commanding Jewel would be able to contest either the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) or Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m) during the 2014 Brisbane Winter Racing Carnival and she performed fairly in two barrier trials at Cranbourne and Wangaratta, but Corstens opted to save the three-quarters sister to Atlantic Jewel for a 2014 Spring Racing Carnival campaign.

The veteran trainer is yet to decide the exact path that Commanding Jewel will follow during the 2014 Spring Racing Carnival, but she has been included in the nominations for the Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) and she is available at a quote of $26 at Ladbrokes Australia to win the Australasian Weight-For-Age Championship.
