Classy Peron Wins at Doomben

Patinack-owned filly Peron announced herself as a horse of serious potential with a classy win in the Novotel Brisbane Airport Class 6 Plate (1350m) at Doomben today.

But what happens next with the three-year-old is still under a cloud as she is due to go under the hammer at Magic Millions National Racehorse Sale on June 7 as part of the reduction of Patinack Farm.

Jumping a $2.80 favourite, Peron emerged from midfield in the straight to quickly assume the lead and produce a commanding win over Tax Evader and Keep It Moist.

Trainer John Thompson admits he has no idea what lies ahead for the daughter of Husson but is confident she has class on her side.

“Whatever happens with her, she’s a very good filly going forward,” Thompson said.

“She’s a three-year-old taking on older horses there. She’s got ability, she’s going places.”

Peron has now won five of six starts and is nominated for the $1.36 million Stradbroke Handicap in two weeks. On face value a race that looks a suitable target is the Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m) on June 22.

Where she heads next remains to be seen but jockey Michael Cahill said there is plenty of improvement to come.

“This surface here today is probably not her preferred. She needs it a bit firmer, so the fact she was still able to win today speaks volumes of her ability,” Cahill said.

“Even though she won and looked impressive, she’s still capable of better.”
