A wide barrier shouldn’t affect the chances of super sprinter Chautauqua when he begins his Everest countdown in the Group 2 $200,000 Bowermans Office Furniture Shorts (1100m) at Randwick on Saturday.

Chautauqua is a noted back maker and new jockey Brenton Avdulla will no doubt settle the Team Hawks trained grey at the tail of the nine horse field from barrier eight.

Chautauqua has produced some outstanding displays of powerhouse sprinting and has come from way off the pace to win the last three runnings of the Group 1 $2.5m Darley T J Smith Stakes (1200m) at Randwick.

Avdulla has got the call up to partner the seven year old in the Shorts and in the upcoming $10m The Everest (1200m) at Randwick on October 14 after regular rider Tommy Berry, who is now contracted to ride in Hong Kong, was unable to gain a release to ride in Sydney on The Everest Race Day.

Chautauqua’s newly slotted Everest rival Redzel has Hugh Bowman back in the saddle in the Shorts and will explode out of barrier five to take up his customary front running role.

The Team Snowden trained Redzel led all of the way to claim his maiden Group 1 win in the $700,000 James Boag’s Premium Doomben 10000 (1200m) at Doomben during the Brisbane Winter Carnival and then when resuming jockey Kerrin McEvoy used the same tactics to cruise to a two lengths win in the Group 3 $150,000 Concorde Stakes (1000m) at Randwick on September 2.

The Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott trained English is also warming up for The Everest when she resumes in the Shorts from the outside gate with Blake Shinn in the saddle.

Group 1 performer Fell Swoop was spelled after finishing ninth in the Doomben 10,000 and has trialled twice at Rosehill for two thirds over 900m for his return in The Shorts.

Tye Angland has been booked to ride Fell Swoop who has drawn just worse than midfield at barrier six.
