Last Saturday’s Randwick winner Charlie Boy will be set for another Brisbane Winter Carnival campaign after scoring first up in the Group 3 $150,000 Liverpool City Cup (1300m).

Charlie Boy had a successful 2015 Brisbane Winter with a win in the Group 3 $125,000 Darley BRC Sprint (1350m) followed by a second to Boban in the Group 1 $750,000 James Boag’s Premium Doomben 10000 (1350m) at Doomben.
The Myboycharlie four year old showed that he has come back as good as ever with a hard fought win over Rocky Sturdy and Good Project and co-trainer Paul Snowden said he would likely space his runs to keep him on the fresh side.
“He’s a very effective fresh horse and that’s the way we’re going to attack this prep, space his runs,” Snowden said.
“He could have a light Sydney autumn and then get up to Brisbane again.”
Winning jockey Blake Shinn said he was impressed with Charlie Boy’s tough first up effort and expects the gelding to produce more wins this preparation.
“He’s started off this prep on a great note and I’m sure he’s going to win a few more this time in,” Shinn said.
While Team Snowden will target the major sprints in Brisbane again, his next start during the Sydney Autumn Carnival is likely to be the Group 1 $1m George Ryder Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill on Golden Slipper Day.
Charlie Boy was coming off an indifferent Spring Carnival campaign that saw him placed once from four starts and was having his first start since finishing tenth to Disposition in the Group 3 $200,000 Guvera Stakes (1400m) at Flemington on October 31.
He was sent out at the good odds of $11 in the Liverpool City Stakes while his better fancied stablemate Rich Enuff started the $3.10 favourite.
Rich Enuff showed his usual early speed to lead up the field but faded in the straight to finish fifth, one and a quarter lengths behind Charlie Boy, and was later detected to have bled from both nostril, immediately resulting in a three month ban from racing.
Connections of Rich Enuff have made the decision to retire the four year old stallion and he will stand alongside his sire Written Tycoon at Woodside Park Stud in Victoria in the Spring.
