Gollan will be the fourth stable that Charlie Boy has raced under and the six year old will be carrying the 59.5kg top weight with apprentice Alannah Fancourt in the saddle.

Charlie Boy showed plenty of abilty in his two year old days when prepared by Gerald Ryan at Rosehill and continued his winning form when transferred to Randwick trainers Peter and Paul Snowden.

The Snowdens were able to win the Group 3 $125,000 Darley BRC Sprint (1350m) with Charlie Boy during the 2015 Brisbane Winter Carnival and returned the following year to run third to Music Magnate in the Group 1 $750,000 James Boag’s Premium Doomben 10000 (1350m) at Doomben.

Charlie Boy’s form fell away after that and he found himself at Caulfield in the stables of Ciaron Maher but was unable to regain his best form.

Gollan has changed up his routine and changed some race day gear and the leading Brisbane trainer has been happy with his progress which has included a fifth and a second in two recent 1000m barrier trials at Doomben on July 11.

“Triple Crown sent him here after his Flemington run was poor. He just wasn’t firing down there,” Gollan AAP.

“So we sent him for a good spell where he could be on the water walker and he has had two trials since returning to our stables. I was really pleased with them both and he seems to be enjoying himself.”

“He is a real old gentleman around the stables and a pleasure to train.”

“He has been racing in glue-on shoes so we will take those off and have normal racing plates.”

Gollan is also hoping that the in-form Fancourt will be able to get something extra out the six year old when he he steps out at Doomben.

“Lani (Alannah Fancourt) has ridden him in his trials and he has gone well for her,” Gollan said.

“Often you find with these older horses they go well later in their careers for kids. It is a case of the horse telling the rider where he wants to be.”

Charlie Boy has been kept safe at $8 at Ladbrokes.com.au for his debut for the Gollan stable at Doomben with the consistent Irish Constabulary heading the market order at $3.20 just ahead of the Kelly Doughty trained Flamboyer at $3.60.
