Chairman’s Stakes quinella among South Australian Derby nominations

Waging War and Grand Chancellor are among the thirty-five nominations for Group 1 $600,000 South Australian Derby (2500m) at Morphettville on May 13 and look likely to clash again after running the quinella in the Chairman’s Stakes.

The Leon Macdonald and Andrew Gluyas trained Waging War was able to hold out Phillip Stokes’ promising stayer Grand Chancellor when the pair finished first and second in the Group 3 $120,000 Chairman’s Stakes (2030m) at Morphettville last Saturday.

Waging War made it a hat trick of wins in the Chairman’s Stakes while Grand Chancellor was in the winner’s stall two starts back when he scored a solid victory in the Listed $110,000 Port Adelaide Guineas (1800m) at Morphettville on April 8.

Caulfield trainer Ciaron Maher has nominated Ruthven who is coming off a last start second to Toffee Nose in the $250,000 VOBIS Gold Heath (2000m) at Caulfield on April 22.

Toffee Nose from the Danny O’Brien stables is an acceptor in Saturday’s Group 1 $400,000 Schweppes Oaks (registered as Australasian Oaks) (2000m) at Morphettville and one of several fillies nominated for the South Australian Derby.

The other fillies entered to take on the boys in the South Australian Derby are Harlow Gold, Miss Strathallan, Pretty Punk, Savvy Dreams, Sebring Dream, Sedanzer and Wheal Leisure.
