Perfect conditions at Flemington today saw Centennial Park break a two year drought with a win in the Listed $120,000 Super Saturday Stakes over 1400m.

With the Flemington track being upgraded from a dead 4 to a good 3 and a first class ride from Noel Callow, Centennial Park ($7.50) was able to record his first win since taking out the Group 2 $200,000 Cleanevent Expressway Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill in February 2011.

Callow successfully renewed his association with winning trainer David Payne which included a second on Centennial Park in the 2011 Group 1 $350,000 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) at Warwick Farm.

But Callow was able to go one better today with a well-timed run to beat the smart Star Of Giselle ($5.50) and the tough British General ($3.40 favourite).

“It’s nice to get on him and win,” Callow said.

“The last time I rode for David and this horse was the Chipping Norton two years ago and he got knocked off by Danleigh.”

Payne was confident he had made the right decision to come to Flemington after Centennial Park had also been nominated for the Chipping Norton Stakes at Warwick Farm today, and he proved to right.

“He’s had his problems over the years and I think we picked the right race today,’ Payne said.

“I put him in here and said this could be the one. “

“He can’t have it too hard and he hates the mud.”

Centennial Park has shown his liking for Flemington with a win and a placing over the 1400m and Payne knew it was his best chance to get back in the winner’s list.
