Caulfield Guineas Barrier Ideal For Bon Aurum

Bon Aurum was allocated barrier ten at the 2015 Caulfield Guineas barrier draw that was held yesterday morning and trainer Ciaron Maher believes that the wide draw may be perfect for the talented three-year-old.

Bon Aurum worked through the grades during his maiden racing campaign and he stamped himself as a legitimate Caulfield Guineas contender when he scored back-to-back wins in the Listed Pin And Win Stakes (1400m) at Flemington on September 12 and the Group 3 Caulfield Guineas Prelude (1400m) on September 26.

The Bon Hoffa colt was able to roll into the race from wide draws in both of his wins at black-type level and Maher is confident that the three-year-old will be able to do the same in the 2015 Caulfield Guineas this weekend.

“His last two starts he has been wide and he seems to like to roll into his races,” Maher told Racing Ahead.

“It looks like it will probably map pretty similar for him.

“He was really strong through the line.

“It gives you the confidence going out to a mile and he is back to his home track again, so he has a bit in his favour.

“We didn’t do a lot with him leading into that race because he has had a bit of racing and similarly leading into this race we are really just ticking him over.

“His fitness is great and we are really just keeping him nice and fresh.”

Bon Aurum is currently available at 2015 Caulfield Guineas odds of $14 with Ladbrokes and he is currently on the fourth line of betting behind Press Statement ($2.50), Ready For Victory ($7), Dal Cielo ($9) and Tarzino ($12).

Maher believes that it is a very open edition of the Caulfield Guineas, but he admits that Press Statement is deserving of his position on top of the market following his impressive win in the Group 2 Stan Fox Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill Gardens on September 26.

“I feel that it is fairly even,” Maher said.

“Press Statement was very impressive last Saturday and he is a deserving short favourite, but as of the rest of them there were good runs right through the Prelude and you can make a case for quite a few of them.

“It is fairly open outside of the favourite.”

Bon Aurum will be Maher’s first ever runner in the Caulfield Guineas and he has the chance to record his fifth win at the highest level of racing.
