Caulfield Cup Weights Far From Certain

My Kingdom Of Fife

My Kingdom Of Fife could become the Caulfield Cup top weight

My Kingdom Of Fife could become the top weight for the 2011 Caulfield Cup despite sitting three kilograms off the current number one and eighth on the order of entry.

The Caulfield Cup ballot and weights were released yesterday and among the 237 names on the list there was plenty of information to take in.

The first thing to notice was of course the first name on the list, that being Americain.

Last year’s Melbourne Cup champion is on track to defending that title and should he pass through the Caulfield Cup he’ll carry 58kgs.

It’s another international taking up second spot on the list as well with Dangerous Midge from the USA with 57.5kg.

After that it’s a drop to Efficient at 57kg, Descarado and Japanese horse Meiner Kitz at 56kg, Alandi at 55.5kg and then Midas Touch, Rebel Raider and My Kingdom Of Fife at 55kgs.

The interesting thing though is that not one of those horses is anywhere near a certainty to actually run in the race.

Americain, Dangerous Midge and Alandi are battling poor form, Efficient is yet to even make his comeback, Meiner Kitz won’t be in Australia and Rebel Raider has been retired.

My Kingdom Of Fife looks the most likely to be there on the day but even he is no sure thing according to Chris Waller.

That being said though he did admit he was content with the weight he’s been allocated.

“I’d rather have a horse closer to the top of the weights than the bottom because it means they are good enough to be there,” Waller said.

“Obviously it doesn’t make winning the race any easier but it guarantees them a start.”

Ironically though should My Kingdom Of Fife become the number one ballot he’d actually end up carrying 57kg as that’s the minimum top weight for the race.

That wasn’t the only talking point to come out of the nominations either with plenty of attention given to three mares towards the bottom of the weights.

Lights of Heaven (51.5kgs), Scarlett Lady (51.5kgs) and Shamrocker (52kgs) have all being rated as having the ability to become the first four year old mare in 10 years to win the Caulfield Cup.

Should My Kingdom Of Fife or any other horse under the 57kg limit become top weight though their weights will also be lifted comparatively.
