Claiming an impressive eight race wins and two minors from just 14 competitive appearances on course to date, Who Shot Thebarman displayed an exceptional turn of foot in the final straight at Flemington to win the Sofitel Girls Day Out Handicap (2000m) on September 13th and will be aiming for a third-consecutive race win in the 2014 Caulfield Cup after taking out the Group 3 Bart Cummings (2520m) by close to three lengths last time out.
Thrilled to have retained the ride on the Yamanin Vital gelding this afternoon, veteran jockey Glen Boss said he is confident Who Shot Thebarman will lay a great account for himself but is unsure where he will figure in calculations; now available at odds of $14 in Caulfield Cup betting markets.
“To be honest I don’t really know where he sits at the moment,” Boss told TVN on Friday.
“He’s a very strong stayer and if they go really hard he will keep coming, and he’s pretty quick when he has to be as well.
“Probably the Bart Cummings form isn’t good enough normally for a Caulfield Cup, but he’s very tough this horse so we’ll know a lot more about him after tomorrow.”
A standout in major staying event in his native New Zealand over the 2013 spring, summer and early autumn this year, Who Shot Thebarman finished second to classy stayer Military Move in the Group 3 Manawatu Cup (2300m) before winning both the Group 2 Avondale Gold Cup (2400m) and Group 1 Auckland Cup (3200m) back-to-back; this latter his maiden at the highest level of racing.
Having steadily built to the task this time in; finishing a forgettable fourteenth in the Canterbury Hurlstone RSL Handicap (1400m) and seventh in the Listed Premier’s Cup (1800m) prior to his two most recent triumphs, Who Shot Thebarman may figure as a particularly smart Caulfield Cup betting play at current odds having been charged with carrying a very contestable 55kgs.
