Cassidy wraps up early Randwick double on Maules Creek

Jockey Jim Cassidy wrapped up an early winning double at Randwick today with a rails hugging ride on  Maules Creek in the Listed $100,000 Turnpoint Randwick City Stakes (2000m).

While Nash Rawiller scouted wide on the home turn on Herculian Prince, Cassidy stuck to the fence and went on to score by a solid win.

Maules Creek who started at $7.50 has been knocking on the door of late and was coming into today’s race with two placings from his last two starts.

“He just run into a couple of bad tracks at Rosehill when we had a fair bit of rain,” Cassidy said.

“It’s a credit to the curator here at Randwick. This bloke normally can’t pick his feet up in the wet.”

“I thought I would get as hard up against the fence as I could and I knew he would get through it. He was fit and would take it to them.”

Rawiller set a solid pace on Herculian Prince four horses off the fence and when he went wider on the hometurn looking for the better going, Cassidy elected to stick to the rails which proved to be a winning move.

Winning trainer John Thompson was considering  scratching Maules Creek when the rain came but was glad he held off.

“I was contemplating scratching him when the rain came. He’ll just kick along in these sought of races. There’s another one on in a couple of weeks and hopefully Jimmy will stick with him,” Thomspon said.
