Co-trainers Peter and Paul Snowden had to reassess Capitalist’s Spring Carnival campaign after a shock first up defeat when fourth as a short priced favourite in the Group 3 $150,000 Smithfield RSL Club San Domenico Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill on August 13.

But the Written Tycoon colt looks to be back on track with a convincing win in an 800m Randwick barrier trial today.

Capitalist sat in behind That’s A Good Idea and Redzel before racing away to record a one and a half lengths win over his stablemates with part owner James Horan from James Horan Bloodstock immediately announcing via twitter that the colt would step out in the Roman Consul Stakes.

“Capitalist sharp in his trial at Randwick this morning, heads to G2 Roman Consul Stakes 1st Oct,” Horan tweeted.

Capitalist is a winner of four of his six starts and as well and winning the Group 1 $3.5m Longines Golden Slipper (1200m) at Rosehill during the Sydney Autumn Carnival had previously won the $2m Magic Millions 2yo Classic (1200m) at the Gold Coast in January.

Peter Snowden said after Capitalist’s failure in the San Domenico Stakes that he would try to keep the colt to set weights races and the Roman Consul Stakes comes under that category with the colts and geldings to carry 56.5kg and the fillies to carry 54.5kg.

“We just had a change of plans and we want to put him in races at level weights and not when he is giving them 4-5kg,” Peter Snowden told The Daily Telegraph.

“We want to put him in a set weights race next and we want to get things in our favour rather than be on heavy ground and giving away weight.”

“The Coolmore Stud Stakes is 100 per cent the goal.”

A good performance from Capitalist in the Roman Consul Stakes will see him progress to the Group 1 $500,000 Coolmore Stud Stakes (1200m) at Flemington on October 29, the first day of the four day Melbourne Cup Carnival.
