Canberra will get its very own bonus scheme as of September 1st this year.

The scheme, which will be known as CanBOBS, will deliver a $5,000 bonus to eligible horses who win at the territory’s major racecourse; Thoroughbred Park.

$4,625 of the bonus will be paid to the winning horse’s connections, while the winning trainer will receive an additional $250 and $125 will go to the Australian Jockeys Association.

Horses that are eligible for the existing Racing NSW BOBS will also be eligible for the new CanBOBS, which is entirely funded by the Canberra Racing Club (CRC).

Chairman of the CRC, Tim Olive, believes the new bonus scheme will improve Canberra Racing’s place in the thoroughbred industry.

“CanBOBS will deliver significantly greater returns to eligible owners and therefore will be a boost to the local and regional racing industry,” Mr Olive said.

“We anticipate CanBOBS will deliver improved revenue to the Club through wagering as a result of stronger race fields and form lines.”

Local trainers have been quick to voice their support of the new bonus scheme.

“It’s a big win for the local industry and a big win for owners who support the local trainers; it will certainly put Canberra back on the map,” premiership winning trainer Nick Olive said.

Trainer Matthew Dale feels that CanBOBS will encourage quality horses to stay and race in Canberra, rather than chasing the more lucrative races in Sydney or Melbourne.

“It’s a positive step and something that needed to happen for a long time,” he said.

“Better quality fields and ultimately a higher standard of racing in the ACT.”

Trainer Barbara Joseph shares Matthew Dale’s views.

“It’s the best thing Canberra Racing has done for the industry since the synthetic track and will be great for owners and for trainers who won’t have to travel to seek higher prize money from BOBS,” she said.

Canberra Racing Club CEO, Peter Stubbs, is eagerly awaiting the introduction of CanBOBS.

“I look forward to an increase in the quality of racing and I hope that CanBOBS will deliver wider industry and community benefits over time such as improved wagering turnover, an expansion of the number of horses in training, increased employment in the racing industry and a higher profile for Canberra racing,” Mr Stubbs said.
