Well bred filly Camari has earned herself a start in the Group 1 $400,000 Schweppes Oaks (registered as Australasian Oaks) (2000m) at Morphettville on May 2 with her breakthrough win at Canterbury yesterday.

Camari was having her sixth race start when she finished strongly from back in the small field to record a nose win over Almost Crystal in a 1550m Maiden.

Winning trainer James Cummings said the Commands filly’s career to date had been plagued by bad manners but she was on her best behaviour yesterday and she will now head to Adelaide.

“She is a very well bred filly that has taken a while to put it together, as she has poor barrier manners which has taken a couple of trips up the highway to sort out, but thankfully giving her the time has finally paid off,” Cummings said.

“I was rather impressed with the way she finished off and will be sending her to Adelaide next Saturday for the Schweppes Oaks.

“We have always thought of her as a ‘black type’ filly and I feel she will now go on with it and keep improving with racing.”

Winning jockey Glyn Schofield was impressed with the way Camari finished off the race after settling near the tail of the field in the early stages.

“She was touch slow to begin, but travelled nicely in the run.” Schofield said.

“I gave her a click up at the 500m as she was a little flatfooted but she responded nicely, and I really like the way she dug deep late to finish off.”

Camari had finished second at her previous start in a 1600m Wyong Maiden on April 17 and was sent out yesterday at $3.70 with third placegetter Austin ($2.70 favourite) and fourth placed Unsinkable Sam ($3.40) ahead of her in the betting.

Camari is currently listed as a $26 chance for the Schweppes Oaks with the Auraria Stakes winner Silent Sedition heading the market order at $4.40.
