Melbourne jockey Noel Callow will be the new rider for South Australian Derby hopeful Grand Chancellor in the Group 3 $120,000 Chairman’s Stakes (2030m) at Morphettville on Saturday.

Callow replaces the injured Dom Tourneur who has been aboard the Phillip Stokes trained three year old at his last two starts, including a last start win in the Listed $110,000 Port Adelaide Guineas (1800m) at Morphettville on April 8.

“He’s obviously a very good rider and we’ve had some good success winning the Geelong feature with Noel last year,’’ Stokes told The Advertiser.

Stokes and Callow have had feature race success in the past when they teamed up with Captain Duffy to win the Listed $120,000 Emsley Lodge Geelong Classic (2200m) at Geelong during the 2016 Spring Carnival.

Another good performance from Grand Chancellor will see Stokes line the Savabeel colt up in the Group 1 $600,000 South Australian Derby (2500m) at Morphettville on May 13

“I’m very happy with him,’’ Stokes said.

“He’s trained on beautifully. I basically have him where I want him. It’s just a matter of keeping him ticking over. Whether or not he can run the 2500m in the Derby remains to be seen.”

Grand Chancellor, who has drawn nicely at barrier four, is on the third line of betting at $6 for the Chairman’s Stakes at Ladbrokes.com.au while the Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young trained Anaheim heads the market at $3.10.

Sydney three year old Screamarr is also well in contention at $7 ahead of Damien Oliver’s mount Netherfield at $11.

Anaheim has been freshened up since running ninth to Jon Snow in the Group 1 $2m BMW Australian Derby (2400m) at Randwick on April 1 and is currently marked at $11 for the South Australian Derby.

Chris Parnham takes over from Hugh Bowman on Anaheim in the Chairman’s Stakes and the Fastnet Rock colt should get a good midfield run from barrier eight.
