Cadillac Mountain a chance to run in 2017 Adelaide Cup

Melbourne Cup winning trainer Darren Weir could have two live chances in the Group 2 $400,000 Adelaide Cup (3200m) at Morphettville on Monday if he decides to run six year old Cadillac Mountain.

The Weir stable has already confirmed that $5 favourite Master Of Arts will take his place in the feature two mile after winning the Group 3 $120,000 James Boag’s Premium Lord Reims Stakes (2600m) at Morphettville last Saturday.

Cadillac Mountain ran his best race this campaign when second to Big Memory in the Listed $120,000 Roy Higgins Quality (260m) at Flemington on March 4 and is now a $13 for the Adelaide Cup at Ladbrokes.com.au.

“I’m not sure what we’ll do with Cadillac Mountain yet. He’s a ‘maybe’ at this stage,” Weir told The Advertiser.

Weir also had Lord Van Percy nominated for the Adelaide Cup but the English import will head to New Zealand to run in the Group 1 NZ$500,000 Auckland Cup (3200m) at Ellerslie on Saturday.

Weir’s stable representative Jarrod McLean was very pleased with the winning effort of Master Of Arts in the Lord Reims Stakes.

“He can certainly stay, so that’s really important,” McLean said.

“We’ll see you back here on Monday week.”

On the second line of betting at $6 for the Adelaide Cup is the Stuart Webb trained Annus Mirabilis who is coming off a last start fifth to Big Memory in the Roy Higgins Quality.

Annus Mirabilis has shown some good staying potential in the past with a win over 2400m four starts back in BenchMark 78 Handicap at Sandown followed by a win over 2800m in the Listed $150,000 Bagot Handicap at Flemington on January 1.

Next in the betting at $10 is the Robert Hickmott trained Chance To Dance just ahead of the $12 chance De Little Engine from the Danny O’Brien stable.

Early market order for the Adelaide Cup at Ladbrokes.com.au: $5 Master Of Arts, $6 Annus Mirabilis, $10 Chance To Dance, $12 De Little Engine, $13 Cadillac Mountain, $15 Assign, Jim’s Journey, Mail It In, $17 Second Bullet, $21 Gallante, Almoonqith, $26 Darabad, $31 Honey Steel’s Gold, Oncidium Ruler, , $34 or better the rest.

The final field for the Adelaide Cup will be released on Wednesday, March 8, 2017.
