Bush Flop Flying Fuji Chases City Riches

Flying Fuji has earned herself an unexpected metropolitan test after her impressive last start performance.

The three-year-old filly finished a disappointing 11th of 12 runners at Mudgee on May 6, however, trainer Greg Bennett decided to press on to the $500,000 Inglis 3YO Guineas at Scone on May 19.

The Fusaichi Pegasus filly, who cost just $4,000 at the 2010 Inglis Scone Yearling Sale, went on to finish second in the race.

That effort earned her a massive $100,000 in prize money.

Flying Fuji has now won two of her five starts and earned more than $114,000 in prize money.

“With her run in the Guineas we went from one extreme to the other with her,” Bennett said.

“From my point of view her run at Mudgee (when 11th) was very distressing.

“All I could put in down to was the hard track because she jarred up.”

The only horse to better Flying Fuji in the Guineas was Pampelonne, who already has close to $550,000 in prize money to his name.

“We knew she was never going to beat Pampelonne but it was well worth running her because it was a good money race,” Bennett said.

“There was ten thousand dollars for finishing top eight and that’s all we were hoping for.

“I’ve always liked her so to run on to finish second was pleasing.”

Bennet will now take on a mile race at Warwick Farm Racecourse this Saturday.

“The mile will suit her and my only concern with her is that sometimes she’s not so good in the barriers,” he said.

“She’s been good lately but she has been a real nightmare.”
