Bush Filly Keeps Streak Alive in Brisbane

At the home turn on her city debut, even trainer Donald Baker thought Bradbury Chocolate was gone.

But in a remarkable finish, the Toowoomba filly showed an electrifying turn of foot to come from six wide and last at the top of the straight to reel in her rivals in Saturday’s QTIS 3YO Handicap (1110m) at Doomben.

On a heavy track on which only leaders had experienced success earlier in the day, the unbeaten daughter of Bradbury’s Luck bucked the trend, flying down the outside to win by a short head in front of In A Storm and Top Of The Rock.

“She surprised me again, at the turn I thought she’d run last,” Baker said.

“But she’s a filly that just wants to win.”

Bought for just $800 as a birthday present for Baker’s partner, the talented youngster’s seven undefeated starts have brought home more than $80,000 in prize money.

After witnessing her astonishing performance on Saturday, Baker is confident the rising star can deliver more success and has earmarked a 1200-metre race at Doomben in two weeks as her next likely hit-out.

“If she keeps running like that, you’d have to think she’ll win a couple more,” Baker said.

“There’s a QTIS race in two weeks again for the same prize money and all going well we’ll head there.

“She’s got a bit of a bung eye but she’s pulled up fine.”

Bradbury Chocolate has surprised her trainer with every run so far and while he believes black-type racing may not be too far around the corner, he is happy to remain patient with the ever-improving horse.

“We’ll take it one step at a time and see how we go,” he said.

Prior to her metropolitan win on Saturday, the three-year-old had dominated all in her path at Cunnamulla, Roma, Charleville, and Toowoomba with a shortest winning margin of three lengths.

Bradbury Chocolate’s win on Saturday capped a tremendous day in the saddle for apprentice jockey Anthony Allen who piloted home five winners throughout the meeting.
