William Buick will claim a nice piece of history in the 2011 Melbourne Cup regardless of whether his mount Lost In The Moment wins the race or not.

Buick comes from Norwegian origins and will be the first rider ever in the Melbourne Cup to come from Norway.

Nowadays Buick is based in the UK and has enjoyed success throughout Europe.

He’s never raced in Australia before and is excited about the fact he will make his debut in the race that stops the nation.

“It’s a fantastic race and it’s my first time in Australia,” he said.

“It’s one of the world’s leading races so I’m just very happy to be part of it.”

Of course simply being here isn’t what it’s all about though, his mind is focussed on earning a victory on a horse he rates as a solid chance.

Lost In The Moment comes here after running fourth in the Lodge Stakes at royal Ascot, 7th in the Ebor Handicap and second in Goodwood Cup, a race where Buick was at the helm.

“I’m very pleased to get the ride back again,” he said.

“I don’t have any experience when it comes to the Melbourne Cup but I’ve seen what kind of horse it takes to win the race.

“He certainly likes big fields, that’ll suit him and he’ll get trip.”

One area of concern he does acknowledge though is the horse tends to get back deep which leaves the door open to simply not finding a run.

“He is a horse that likes to come from the back…I’m going to have to be lucky in my run,” he said.

Lost In The Moment is very different to the usual mould of European stayers that come across for the Melbourne Cup in that he’s actually more suited to a shorter trip than anything longer.

“He’s a mile and a quarter horse that’s managed to stay the two miles,” Buick said.

“I know in the Melbourne Cup they go quick to the first bend and then  pull up.

“He would have the required speed at the tail end of the race.”

Lost In The Moment is the second of the Godolphin chances which are headlines by Modun.
