Leading trainer Chris Waller will now have to find a replacement rider for Sydney Cup favourite Permit with Brown not returning to the saddle until May 10.

Permit forced his way to the head of Sydney Cup betting with a win for Brown in the Group 2 $175,000 Schweppes Chairman’s Quality (2600m) at Randwick on April 14 and looked the goods for Waller to win back to Cups after taking out the 3200m Group 1 last year with Stand To Gain.

The Racing New South Wales Appeals Board dismissed Brown’s appeal against a careless riding suspension imposed on him by stewards for causing interference in the Group 1 $1m Darley T J Smith (1200m) at Randwick last Saturday when his mount Rain Affair shifted out at the 100m forcing Hallowell Belle out across Foxwedge causing the three year old to be checked.

Brown’s Randwick suspension will piggyback on another careless rising charge that he sustained at Canterbury the day before but will be back in time to kick off the Brisbane Winter Carnival on BTC Cup day at Doomben on May 12.

Melbourne trainer Tony Vasil was fined $2000 by the Racing Appeals and Disciplinary Board for presenting his horse Cloanthy at the Moe barrier trials with a prohibitive substance in her system.

Vasil pleaded guilty after Hydroxyethylpromizine was detected in a urine sample taken from Cloanthy at the trials on January 23.

Cloanthy had to pass a barrier test after being barred for unruly behaviour in the starting gates at Ballarat on January 12 and Hydroxyethylpromizine is a major metabolite of acepromazine which acts as a tranquillising agent.
