Corey Brown has been fined for wearing a non-standard vest

Top jockeys Corey Brown and Glyn Schofield are the latest riders to be fined after stewards continued a crackdown on modified safety vests this week.

Both Brown and Schofield were found to be wearing non-standard vests at the Rosehill Gardens barrier trials on Tuesday.

Penalties were handed down by stewards at Canterbury yesterday, with Brown and Schofield receiving a $600 and $400 fine, respectively.

Brown, who was fined an additional $1000 earlier this month for the same offense, was frustrated by the situation.

“I don’t think there should be one,” he said.

The jockey was reprimanded for removing a piece of foam from the tail of the vest, however, insists it was necessary for his comfort.

“I’m sure if I approached Mr (chief steward Ray) Murrihy before doing it he would have allowed me to do it,” Brown said.

“It’s not for a weight reason; it’s for a comfort reason to fit me properly.

“I explained why I did it because it used to bang into the saddle and then rise up towards the skull cap.”

During yesterday’s hearing Brown suggested that the stewards were choosing to single out certain riders, a claim that deputy chief steward Marc Van Gestel quickly renounced.

“We take every case on its merits and on face value and if you’re making accusations that stewards are singling out a couple of riders those accusations are unfounded,” Mr Van Gestel said.
