Corey Brown is determined to partner Smart Missilein the 2011 Cox Plate even if it means wasting to a level he hasn’t been at for years.

Brown will need to drop to 49.5kg to meet the requirements of the three year old at Moonee Valley on October 22.

He will get a feel of the horse on October 8 in the Caulfield Guineas but he will be taking on a personal trainer and a dietician to strip down further in the following two weeks.

“It isn’t going to be easy but at least I’ve got sufficient time to do it properly and work towards being the right weight on the day,” Brown said.

“I haven’t needed to ride lower than 51kg since I won the Melbourne Cup on Shocking. I got down that low without too many hassles.

“I’ll be watching what I eat and staying on top of my fitness. I’ve got a trainer and dietician on board already to make sure I do everything I can.”

Brown scored the ride by being one of the few jockeys who could commit to being able to ride Smart Missile in both the Caulfield Guineas and Cox Plate.

Last start rider Brett Preble couldn’t do the same so trainer Anthony Cummings decided to look elsewhere.

Smart Missile’s regular rider is Glen Boss but he is still recovering in hospital after his fall on Crystal Lily when she died suddenly last week.

He had originally vowed to be back within two weeks however it will almost certainly be double that after his shoulder was found to be badly broken and required surgery to insert metal plates.

“The prognosis is a little worse than what we originally thought and I’d say he will be out for at least a month,” his racing manager Reece Murphy said.

Brown isn’t completely foreign to Smart Missile, he has already steered him to victory before when he won the Breeders Plate last year.

He was actually the first man to be offered the fulltime gig but passed it up because at the time he was committed to Shocking.

“He is definitely a special animal, there is no doubting that,” Brown said.

“I think he has just been getting too far back in his races, so it will be my job to make sure he can overcome that.”

Smart Missile was positioned last after the jump in the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes and despite firing off some lightning sectionals the leaders were off and gone as he finished just out of a place.
