Broken takes out Carlyon Stakes in blanket finish

The Darren Weir trained Broken scored back to back wins when he came with a flying finish to take out the Listed $120,000 1print.com.au Carlyon Stakes (1000m) at Moonee Valley today.

Jockey Nick Hall was happy to sit back in the field with favourite Adamantium and Adebisi setting a hot pace and eased the seven year old to the middle of the track to swamp the leader close to the line.

Weir was quick to praise the ride of Hall who was able to get clear running and push Broken out strongly over the final stages.

Runner up Chosen Flyer with Ben Melham and third placegetter Golden Sunshine with Brett Prebble were in the blanket finish with last season’s Thousand Guineas winner Commanding Jewel ending up in sixth spot.

Weir splits Broken’s training up in between his Warrnambool and Ballarat stables and says the tough sprinter has thrived since his last start win in the Group 3 $150,000 Aurie’s Star Handicap  (1200m) at Flemington two weeks ago.

“He’s been bouncing out of his skin so we knew he would run well,” Weir said.

“That’s a good surprise. The ride won the race.”

Craig Williams gave Commanding a lovely run fifth on the fence and looked like being in the finish when he gained a split in the straight but faded to finish sixth, only a length form the winner.
