A Brisbane trip is all but off the table for Melbourne Cup runner-up Fiorente who is set to spell in order to focus on going one better in Australia’s biggest race this year.

The five-year-old import returned with a bang in just his second Australian start on Saturday, storming home to take third place in the Group 1 All Aged Stakes (1400m) at Randwick.

There was speculation he would continue on to Brisbane’s winter carnival for the Group 1 Doomben Cup (2000m) on May 18 but connections have suggested that is unlikely.

“Appears more and more likely that Fiorente will now spell as the main goal has always been #melbournecup,” Part-owners Henderson Racing tweeted.

The All Aged was Fiorente’s first ever race under 2000m but he more than looked the part, beating home a number of quality rivals and finishing just two lengths behind winner All Too Hard.

Trained by Gai Waterhouse, the son of Monsun burst on to the scene in last year’s Melbourne Cup to run home strongly behind Green Moon on Australian debut.

Fiorente is currently second favourite at $11 in early Melbourne Cup markets behind fellow import Puissance De Lune.

Rated a $9 chance, Puissance De Lune won the Group 2 Blamey Stakes (1600m) in his only autumn start after shooting into Melbourne Cup contention late last spring.

The Darren Weir-trained grey earned high praise from top jockey Glen Boss after thrashing his rivals in both the Bendigo Cup and the Queen Elizabeth Stakes.

Also featuring towards the top of the early Melbourne Cup markets are Lloyd Williams-owned import Sea Moon ($11), New Zealand pocket rocket It’s A Dundeel ($13) and Luca Cumani’s 2012 fifth placegetter Mount Athos ($16).
