Trainer David Pfeiffer is confident that Gai’s Choice is in with a fighting chance in tomorrow’s Listed Travel Associates Classic at Eagle Farm Racecourse.

Gai’s Choice will be looking to recapture her form in the race after an out of character beginning to her current campaign.

The General Nediym mare has failed to finish better than sixth this preparation, with her most recent race start resulting in a seventh in the Group 3 Herald Sun Stakes at Flemington.

Pfeiffer is hopeful that Gai’s Choice will be back to her best in Queensland and plans to aim her towards the Magic Millions Carnival in January.

The trainer is currently torn between running the five-year-old in the Magic Million Cup or the Magic Millions Fillies & Mares Handicap.

“At the moment I’m tossing up between having another crack at winning the Fillies and Mares over 1300 metres or running in the Cup over 1400 metres which is worth twice as much prize money,” he said.

“I’ll be guided by how she goes in this race on Saturday and the Just Now Quality at Eagle Farm in a couple of weeks.”

Gai’s Choice has thrived on her past visits to Queensland, winning the Listed Gai Waterhouse Classic at Ipswich in June before placing a close third to Pear Tart in the Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara.

“Everything went right during that campaign,” Pfeiffer said.

“She went from winning a Benchmark 80 first-up to running third in a Group One in the space of six weeks.”

While the mare has not been seen at her best so far this campaign, Pfeiffer can see the appeal of travelling her up to Brisbane once more for tomorrow’s Travel Associates Handicap.

“She didn’t show any signs of tiredness after she came back from Melbourne so I decided to give her a trial and I thought she did enough in that hit out to warrant heading to Brisbane,” he said.

Gai’s Choice has won seven of her 28 race starts and has earned more than $410,000 in prize money during her career.
