The Brisbane winter carnival looks like being the next target for Republic Lad after yet another impressive win in Sydney on the weekend.

The five year old gelding is undoubtedly in career best form despite being in the latter stages of a long campaign.

In fact the horse only made his debut less than 12 months ago and raced until April before a spell.

He returned in July and aside from a short freshen up he’s been going ever since.

He certainly knows what he’s there to do though and he’s performed valiantly at his past five starts.

Things were on the up on November 30 when third over 1550m at Canterbury before running second over a similar trip at the same venue on December 9.

He was then pushed up to 1900m where he only just missed in a tight finish the very next week.

His last have been the best though, he won across 2000m at Rosehill on Boxing Day before his last start win over 2200m at Warwick Farm.

The temptation for Chris Waller must be to keep him going up in trip but he now seems content to put him on ice for the winter.

“He’s had plenty of racing and we might give him a break,” Waller said.

“I’d like to think he could come back and be a chance in a race like the Brisbane Cup.”

He credits plenty of Saturday’s win to Jim Cassidy who was extremely patient on the turn before finding a run back underneath horses.

“That was a great ride by Jim, and Republic Lad attacked the line strongly again. which was pleasing to see,” Waller said.

“The horse has been racing very well this campaign but we have learnt how to ride him now. He likes to be saved for the last shot at them and he does enjoy racing inside horses.”

For his part Cassidy seems to think the horse may have the ability to rise to the next level if given a shot in Brisbane.

“When they start winning and put a few together like this bloke has, it becomes a habit,” he said.

“He might win a good race one day.”
