The Peter Moody trained filly Bring Me The Maid raced her way in the Golden Slipper with a determined win in the Group 2 $175,000 IRT Magic Night Stakes (1200m) at Rosehill today.
Moody said that Bring Me The Maid ($8) will take her place in the Group 1 $3.5m Tooheys New Golden Slipper (1200m) at Rosehill next Saturday after the filly came from near last on the home turn to score by a head over Peggy Jean ($5.50 favourite).
Sultry Feeling ($31) raced in the leading bunch and battled on for third.
Bring Me The Maid with Chad Schofield and Peggy Jean with Blake Shinn both walked out of the barriers and both fillies settled last and second last in the big field.
And while Shinn elected to stick to the inside on Peggy Jean, Schofield switched over heels and eased to the middle of the track to give Bring Me The Maid a clear run to the line.
Moody was confident heading into today’s race after Bring Me The Maid had worked well during the week and said that the Sebring filly will now have an easy week leading up to the Golden Slipper.
“She has really thrived and Tuesday morning she worked with Plucky Belle, the unlucky runner in the previous, more than held her own and probably went a bit the better so that gave me a good feel that she was going to run very well here,” Moody said.
Moody and Schofield combined with Plucky Belle earlier in the day with an unlucky second in the Group 3 $150,000 Hyland Race Colours Birthday Card Stakes (1200m) and were quick to bounce back with a winner.
Schofield feels that there is still plenty of improvement in Bring Me The Maid and is expecting her to be very competitive in the Golden Slipper next week.
“Very dertermined filly, still very green,” Schofield said.
“She was a bit wayward the first time going this direction and there is a lot to improve on.”
“She had a bit ground to make up but when I popped her to the outside and put a couple around her tail she really hit the line strongly.”
“That run today will just top her off nicely for next week and she will derive a lot of benefit out of today’s success.”
