Brazilian Pulse will make her Melbourne Festival of Racing debut when she appears in the $500,000 Kewney Stakes at Flemington this Saturday March 12, 2011.

Last year’s VRC Crown Oaks winner has been placed in the Kewney Stakes by trainer Mike Moroney,  believing it will be the perfect first-up race.

“It’s good prize money ($500,000) and it’s set weights so it’s a great race to kick off her campaign,” he said.

“We deliberately sat back and decided we’d have a go at this race first-up.”

Mike Moroney chose the set weights Kewney Stakes to avoid his filly being given overly high weights by the handicappers.

“The set weights was ideal for her, because in the other ones she was going to be carrying a fair lump of weight around,” Moroney said.

“It was the obvious (first-up) race for her.”

The Captain Rio filly’s may be making only a small appearance in the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival this year due to bad timing.

“Unfortunately, the Coolmore (Classic on March 19) comes up a week earlier this year, which doesn’t fit into our plans,” her trainer said.

The talented filly will either be aimed at just the Doncaster Handicap or both the Rosehill Guineas and AJC Oaks, depending on her performance in this weekend’s Kewney Stakes.

Brazilian Pulse, who also won the Wakeful Stakes last preparation, has posted four wins from six starts and is believed to be back in her best form for this weekend’s race.

“We’ve got her as forward as what we can for her first run,” Moroney said.
