Bow Creek Ready for Australian Cup

Champion hoop Damien Oliver partnered Bow Creek to an impressive win in the Group 2 Peter Young Stakes at his most recent start, and is confident the talented Godolphin runner is primed for success in Saturday’s Group 1 Australian Cup at Flemington.

Bow Creek stood in the barriers in the Peter Young Stakes (1800m) and appeared to be out of contention from the outset, but after settling midfield and receiving a reasonable run in transit, produced a huge late turn of foot to hit the line close to two lengths in the clear of closest rival Fenway.

Oliver is thrilled to have retained the ride on the Shamardal entire for his run in the 2016 Australian Cup (2000m) and believes the horse will be suited by the conditions of the feature race.

“It was a great win the other day and he’s had a really nice preparation,” Oliver told Racing Victoria.

“I haven’t been on him since the other day but I think he has an excellent chance.

“It didn’t really surprise me because he has shown he’s got great ability, but it was great to experience it firsthand being on his back. The acceleration he showed in the 200m was really exciting.”

Oliver concedes the 2016 Australian Cup field is set to be packed full of talent but remains confident Bow Creek is up to the task.

“He’s not across the line by any means, there were some good runs to come out of the race the other day. Our Ivanhowe was a bit unlucky,” Oliver said.

“Even the three-year-old Palentino – you have to respect him because he’s in good form but my horse has had a faultless prep and looks an excellent chance.”

Bow Creek has posted a commendable six wins and five minors through twenty-one career starts so far; debuting for notable British trainer Mark Johnston in 2013 before being transferred to the care of John O’Shea and Godolphin Australia during the recent 2015 Spring Carnival.

Ladbrokes Australia are currently offering Bow Creek at 2016 Australian Cup odds of $3.40 for success, having cut into outright favouritism for the race after winning the Peter Young Stakes.
