Boss to ride for luck on Rebel Dane in Doomben 10,000

Big race jockey Glen Boss will ride for luck from a wide barrier on top fancy Rebel Dane in the Group 1 $650,000 James Boag’s Premium Doomben 10000 (1350m) at Doomben today.

Punters will have their hearts in their mouths as Boss intends to have the $4.60 second favourite back near the tail of the field in the early stages before relying on his ability to navigate a path to victory in the straight.

“We are going back to the old days by riding him really quietly,’’ trainer Gary Portelli told The Daily Telegraph.

“We are going to go back to last or close to it.

“This is what we used to do with this horse, ride him quietly early because he does have a brilliant closing burst.

“If they go quick, then we will get to the outside and come home. If they don’t go quick, then ‘Bossy’ might have to cut corners.

“From a punting point of view, for anyone having a bet it will make it hard.

“But I feel it is better to be out the back than sitting three and four deep and having no horse left for the Stradbroke Handicap.’’

Portelli said that he had to revise riding tactics after Rebel Dane drew barrier ten in the eleven horse field and is hoping the Good 3 track won’t be a leaders bias track like last week at Doomben on Doomben Cup Day.

“I spoke to Glen and we are both on the same page,’’ Portelli said.

“We will watch the early races to see if there is any track bias but we both agree our best chance is to go back and give the horse every chance to be strong late.’’

Portelli said that he is very happy with the condition of Rebel Dane who has had a freshen up after two tough runs during the Sydney Autumn Carnival.

“The horse is spot on,’’ Portelli said.

“He’s drinking plenty and eating plenty, he’s nice and fresh around the track so it’s all looking good.’’

The California Dane four year old chased home new sprinting sensation Lankan Rupee on a heavy track when second in the Group 1 $2.5m Darley T J Smith Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on April 12 then finished three and a quarter lengths fifth to Hana’s Goal in the Group 1 $400,000 Schweppes All Aged Stakes (1400m) at Randwick two weeks later.

Boss has been Rebel Dane’s regular rider since August last year except for one run in the Spring and the pair collected a Group 1 victory with a last stride win in the $400,000 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield on September 29.

Local champ Buffering is holding onto Doomben 10,000 favouritism at $4 with Ladbrokes.com.au just ahead of Rebel Dane at $4.60 and the other home town fancy Spirit Of Boom at $4.80.

BTC Cup winner Famous Seamus is next in the betting at $7.50 ahead of Knoydart at $10 with the two mares Driefontein and Peron both marked at $15, Temple Of Boom at $17, Hot Snitzel at $18 while the outsiders of the field are Conservatorium at $26 and Scream Machine at $41.
